Audemars Piguet (AP) has upgraded its highly sought-after Royal Oak Skeleton Perpetual Calendar watch, now powered by the next-generation perpetual calendar movement released last year. The new movement allows for individual adjustment of each date display via the crown, eliminating the need for any stylus (or toothpick). The initial release of this top-tier skeletonized perpetual calendar watch is crafted from titanium, complemented by mirror-polished, scratch-resistant palladium BMG hardware, while the dial and case back are accented with rose gold. More color options will be released later.
The latest generation of the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar watch is arguably Audemars Piguet's most powerful product yet. It inherits the essence of the classic integrated bracelet perpetual calendar sports watch, a type of watch whose development was previously somewhat limited by a slightly outdated movement. To be fair, similar products from Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin also faced the same issue.
This changed in 2025 when the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar was launched with Audemars Piguet's latest perpetual calendar movement, a major release coinciding with the brand's 150th anniversary. The Caliber 7138 allows for individual adjustment of the date, day of the week, month, and moon phase using only the crown, offering quick, tool-free adjustments that are more flexible than existing systems and support more display functions.
While we were already familiar with the movement's ingenious features, it remained to be seen whether the unfolded movement could aesthetically rival its predecessor. The answer is now clear: in short, it certainly does. In fact, even from a distance, it takes a trained eye to distinguish them. Given the continued popularity of the previous generation, this similarity is undoubtedly a good thing.
The new movement is particularly advantageous for its skeletonized design, as it reveals the normally hidden workings. Most perpetual calendars are like black boxes to the wearer, but skeletonized versions are more appealing because they allow the wearer to see the internal workings when adjusting the date. However, its price is also quite high, reaching 180,200 Swiss francs before tax—almost twice the price of the steel version. Of course, this Audemars Piguet watch is unlikely to be a flop.
Case Study and Coverage
The wearing experience is unsurprising. The case and bracelet dimensions are exactly the same as previous models, so the feel on the wrist will be very familiar to anyone who has worn any 41mm Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar watch since 2015. The appearance is also familiar, using the design of last year's 150th Anniversary Skeletonized Edition, but its aesthetic style can be traced back to the platinum 25829SP launched in 1997, a limited edition of 25 pieces released to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Royal Oak collection.

The case, bracelet, crown, and case back are all made of Grade 5 titanium, while the mirror-polished bezel and center links are made of Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG), an amorphous metal with palladium content accounting for half of its total weight. Audemars Piguet states that the watch is safe to swim in as long as the depth limit does not exceed 50 meters, and offers free (but not under warranty) water resistance testing at its boutiques.
A Case Study of Modern Surface Finishes Luxury watch brands sometimes seem indifferent to the needs of collectors, but this time Audemars Piguet seems to have heard the "inward bevel" discussion that has been prevalent in collector chatter over the past few years. Therefore, the new perpetual calendar movement incorporates over 200 inward bevels, compared to less than 60 in the previous generation.
These inner corners, including the 96 on the mainspring barrel cover, are first crafted by Audemars Piguet's partners using electrical discharge machining (EDM), and then hand-polished. This method of creating inner corners is becoming increasingly common. Even so, according to Audemars Piguet, the polishing process still takes 30 hours. While not a traditional process, it remains a costly and highly challenging task, which is probably why we don't see these sharp inner corners in most of Audemars Piguet's mainline movements, except for the automatic rotor.
This also explains why the bezel's bevel is flat, rather than rounded like the previous generation's skeletonized perpetual calendar. While EDM can create a rounded bezel, a flat bevel is easier to polish and better suits the movement's industrial aesthetic.
A major difference between the latest watch and its predecessor is the warm-toned moon phase display, which complements the rose gold hands and hour markers. This subtle accent color adds warmth to the otherwise monochromatic dial, distinguishing it from last year's cooler-toned 150th Anniversary Edition.
A Clear Innovation: Audemars Piguet's new perpetual calendar watch, launched last year, remains one of the most advanced in its class, even while retaining traditional functions, as it allows individual adjustment of each display item via the crown. This function is clearly visible through the sapphire crystal dial for the first time, a clever and intuitive design. As before, winding the watch is achieved by rotating the crown clockwise while keeping it flush with the case. Pulling the crown out one notch and rotating it clockwise adjusts the date, while rotating it counter-clockwise adjusts the month.
Pulling the crown out to the second position allows for normal time setting. Note that at its core remains a traditional large lever perpetual calendar, which cannot be reversed. Therefore, rotating the crown clockwise past midnight advances the date, while rotating it counter-clockwise past midnight does not change the date, consistent with typical perpetual calendar features. The watch does not stop running when the crown is pulled out, but since it lacks a seconds hand, it does not need to stop either.
Starting from the time setting position, gently push the crown one notch in to reveal a hidden fourth position. From this position, rotating the crown clockwise adjusts the date (and day of the week), while rotating it counter-clockwise adjusts the moon phase. Normally, this ingenious rotation is hidden beneath the dial, which is precisely the charm of this skeletonized watch.
The calendar function of this watch incorporates key innovations from the Royal Oak RD#2 Perpetual Calendar (launched in 2018, then the thinnest perpetual calendar watch), particularly the clever single-layer date and month wheels, effectively reducing the watch's thickness and number of parts. It lacks an instantaneous midnight jump function, but this is a common feature in almost all Audemars Piguet perpetual calendar watches, even those from the pocket watch era.
If there is any drawback to this calendar, it is its day of the week function. Setting it can be cumbersome if the watch has been idle for several months—and even worse if you accidentally set it past the current week while using the quick-set function. Oddly, its weekday display only goes up to week 52, instead of week 53 like many other weekday calendars, thus it's not fully compatible with the ISO 8601 weekday system. Nevertheless, the weekday function adds a touch of elegance to the otherwise somewhat ordinary calendar layout.
The Lean Horse
The base movement of this watch is the same caliber 7121 found in the current Royal Oak "Jumbo" watch, which is also used in the brand's RD#3 ultra-thin flying tourbillon and the recently released Neo Frame jumping hour watch. It also boasts some notable features, such as bidirectional automatic winding (uncommon in ultra-thin movements), a 4 Hz frequency, and powerful torque sufficient to power complications for over 50 hours.
In addition to these quantifiable attributes, the 71xx movement employs an unusual plate-style lug mount. Surprisingly, it's not fixed as one might expect. Instead, the entire assembly slides within a track for easy winding, after which it can be secured simply by tightening screws. While this design is undoubtedly aimed at balancing slimness and convenience, its appearance is also very beautiful.
